Hi there! I have been lurking for a while meaning to post, thought I'd share some results from this years season.
During the 2012 growing season, I grew about 150 vars of potatoes, collected over the years from personal trades, wingnut, Tom, Will Bonsall, and others on SSE. They are a mixture of heirlooms from S. America, US and Europe, Tom Wagner creations, USDA GRIN accessions, breeder lines, commercial mainstays, and Pacific NW heirlooms and other taters of interest.
I wanted to trial a lot of diversity, but at the same time I also wanted to identify some of the top performers in my conditions. Some things I set out to observe and record were tuber attributes like shape, skin color, flesh color, stolon length and tuber set depth, history and species information, disease resistances, frost resistance, productivity, aesthetically pleasing tubers, and of course tastiness/culinary usages. I suspect I will cull about 15-20% of the weakest performing varieties in order to focus on the best in future breeding programs. After cleaning up my spreadsheet a bit more, I will give it to Curzio to publish on his site, Kenosha Potato Project and/or also place it here somehow. I still have to "finish" it a bit more, though filling in all the fields such as culinary usages will take several years... Also, happy to trade taters for new stuff with anyone.
This year I almost exclusively grew potatoes as pull starts in 4in pots, transplanting once they established directly into the ground with the exception of some purchased seed potatoes. They were planted in the field in a 1 ft deep trench at 2 ft centers for typical taters and 3 ft centers for plants that set tubers on long stolons like Guincho negra, Herm 18, Poor Dog I, Poor Dog II, Black Irish, Aggie White, some Skagit Diploids and a number of other diploid vars. Rows were spaced at 3 feet. I have to credit Wingnut for teaching me this method. He's been experimenting with this method and having success, so I had a go, too. Can't recommend it enough, as it vastly improves vigour in almost all potato varieties, we suspect due mostly to disease removal. I'll talk to Wingnut about working on documenting how to do pull starts successfully and post it here when I get the chance.
One gotcha I've heard about and experienced first-hand this year, was that if a pull start is let to grow in a pot too long, many varieties will set fixed-size tubers after certain point no matter what, even if emergency transplanted into the ground. S. tuberosum seem to be more "determinate" and thus more susceptible to being root-bound in 4in pots and will often fixate the size of the tubers for the season if a pull start is left in a pot for more than about 2 weeks, while the diploids seem more "indeterminate" and able to be advantageous and grow out of a root bound zone when a 4in pot is transplanted into the ground. This is a trend and does not always hold true for all varieties. I suspect this effect is due to the fungi and bacterium that associate with the roots communicating the boundaries of the grow space to the plant.

The Pacific NW, being a cold, damp, wet climate, we have our share of potato diseases and pests, that includes black leg, pocket rot, scab, purple mop-top, early and late blight strains, Rhizoctonia, leaf hoppers, flea beetles, wire worm, sometimes even potato cyst nematode, etc etc. It's a wonder the plants can grow and is a testament to how hardy this organism is. Planting in a spot is a bit like roulette, what diseases will I incur the wrath of there? One constant is late blight, so I was keen to take notes about which varieties performed the best against our local late blight strains. I know that since I planted pull starts from April to July, having received new varieties over a period of time, some inevitably missed some of the disease/pest waves. Also, a subset of the tubers that I knew were contaminated with potato cyst nematodes which were quarantined into 4in pots by themselves, so those couldn't really be tested either.
On the topic of potato cyst nematodes (PCN), I am currently growing these under lights and will be treating with Nicotine sulfate to see if that wipes them out. Thankfully this nematode species is easily visible to the eye. Again, simply doing the pull start method has visibly impacted the population level on these tubers.
So, which varieties performed best against the local late blight strains? The following varieties were either unphased as a planted block by late blighted plants next to them, or were mostly unphased, or regenerated well after being blighted: Toro Azul, Kameraz, Red Eye 86F-302-8, Fripapa, and DG-D8-330 Polish. Like I said this list will probably grow when I can control the variables better this year.
As for frost resistance, the Skagit Diploid series as a group had good frost resistance with a few varieties having exceptional frost hardiness as compared to the others. "Maori Purple" a primitive looking purple (which looks very similar to Guincho negra and Herm 18) from New Zealand was by far the best being frosted for over a week and still standing with plenty of regeneration. I am not sure what this varieties real name is, all I know is it is not the Urenika clone. Others included: Perricholi, Santa Ana, and Santa Catalina. Again, I'm sure results were effected by the long stretch of planting time and also the fact that some varieties are just so early in the season that they don't have a chance to be tested by frost... unless deliberately planted late.
As I was looking up information from USDA GRIN, I came across a USDA Frost tolerance Experiment by Bamberg in 1992. They trialled 2624 accessions for frost and recorded results. I want to request some of these accessions to add into the mix, but first I needed to sift out the gold. So I downloaded this data and using grep eliminated any species that probably were genetic dead-ends, too far out of the petota complex, or didn't produce tubers at all. Then I eliminated any that were not very frost resistant or frost resistant and in the highest percentile where noted. Unfortunately, not all the tested accessions were scored, so this limits its usefulness somewhat, but as I understand many were included because they had previously been noted to carry some frost resistance. Sorry, the list is still a bit messy, but it took some work using sed to clean it up to the point where it is at now. Some misc. species are still in there that I haven't yet looked up or didn't have enough information to warrant removal. If you have some info about a particular species (TOM!!?), please chime in so that I can star it on this list or remove it altogether so that this list stays current.

The values are: USDA plant introduction #, whether it is frost resistant or very frost resistant, from what list it was included from, name of tater, species, where collected, whether it was wild or developed, lat & long where found, and percentile of frost resistant within tested varieties.

During the 2012 growing season, I grew about 150 vars of potatoes, collected over the years from personal trades, wingnut, Tom, Will Bonsall, and others on SSE. They are a mixture of heirlooms from S. America, US and Europe, Tom Wagner creations, USDA GRIN accessions, breeder lines, commercial mainstays, and Pacific NW heirlooms and other taters of interest.
I wanted to trial a lot of diversity, but at the same time I also wanted to identify some of the top performers in my conditions. Some things I set out to observe and record were tuber attributes like shape, skin color, flesh color, stolon length and tuber set depth, history and species information, disease resistances, frost resistance, productivity, aesthetically pleasing tubers, and of course tastiness/culinary usages. I suspect I will cull about 15-20% of the weakest performing varieties in order to focus on the best in future breeding programs. After cleaning up my spreadsheet a bit more, I will give it to Curzio to publish on his site, Kenosha Potato Project and/or also place it here somehow. I still have to "finish" it a bit more, though filling in all the fields such as culinary usages will take several years... Also, happy to trade taters for new stuff with anyone.
This year I almost exclusively grew potatoes as pull starts in 4in pots, transplanting once they established directly into the ground with the exception of some purchased seed potatoes. They were planted in the field in a 1 ft deep trench at 2 ft centers for typical taters and 3 ft centers for plants that set tubers on long stolons like Guincho negra, Herm 18, Poor Dog I, Poor Dog II, Black Irish, Aggie White, some Skagit Diploids and a number of other diploid vars. Rows were spaced at 3 feet. I have to credit Wingnut for teaching me this method. He's been experimenting with this method and having success, so I had a go, too. Can't recommend it enough, as it vastly improves vigour in almost all potato varieties, we suspect due mostly to disease removal. I'll talk to Wingnut about working on documenting how to do pull starts successfully and post it here when I get the chance.
One gotcha I've heard about and experienced first-hand this year, was that if a pull start is let to grow in a pot too long, many varieties will set fixed-size tubers after certain point no matter what, even if emergency transplanted into the ground. S. tuberosum seem to be more "determinate" and thus more susceptible to being root-bound in 4in pots and will often fixate the size of the tubers for the season if a pull start is left in a pot for more than about 2 weeks, while the diploids seem more "indeterminate" and able to be advantageous and grow out of a root bound zone when a 4in pot is transplanted into the ground. This is a trend and does not always hold true for all varieties. I suspect this effect is due to the fungi and bacterium that associate with the roots communicating the boundaries of the grow space to the plant.

The Pacific NW, being a cold, damp, wet climate, we have our share of potato diseases and pests, that includes black leg, pocket rot, scab, purple mop-top, early and late blight strains, Rhizoctonia, leaf hoppers, flea beetles, wire worm, sometimes even potato cyst nematode, etc etc. It's a wonder the plants can grow and is a testament to how hardy this organism is. Planting in a spot is a bit like roulette, what diseases will I incur the wrath of there? One constant is late blight, so I was keen to take notes about which varieties performed the best against our local late blight strains. I know that since I planted pull starts from April to July, having received new varieties over a period of time, some inevitably missed some of the disease/pest waves. Also, a subset of the tubers that I knew were contaminated with potato cyst nematodes which were quarantined into 4in pots by themselves, so those couldn't really be tested either.
On the topic of potato cyst nematodes (PCN), I am currently growing these under lights and will be treating with Nicotine sulfate to see if that wipes them out. Thankfully this nematode species is easily visible to the eye. Again, simply doing the pull start method has visibly impacted the population level on these tubers.
So, which varieties performed best against the local late blight strains? The following varieties were either unphased as a planted block by late blighted plants next to them, or were mostly unphased, or regenerated well after being blighted: Toro Azul, Kameraz, Red Eye 86F-302-8, Fripapa, and DG-D8-330 Polish. Like I said this list will probably grow when I can control the variables better this year.
As for frost resistance, the Skagit Diploid series as a group had good frost resistance with a few varieties having exceptional frost hardiness as compared to the others. "Maori Purple" a primitive looking purple (which looks very similar to Guincho negra and Herm 18) from New Zealand was by far the best being frosted for over a week and still standing with plenty of regeneration. I am not sure what this varieties real name is, all I know is it is not the Urenika clone. Others included: Perricholi, Santa Ana, and Santa Catalina. Again, I'm sure results were effected by the long stretch of planting time and also the fact that some varieties are just so early in the season that they don't have a chance to be tested by frost... unless deliberately planted late.
As I was looking up information from USDA GRIN, I came across a USDA Frost tolerance Experiment by Bamberg in 1992. They trialled 2624 accessions for frost and recorded results. I want to request some of these accessions to add into the mix, but first I needed to sift out the gold. So I downloaded this data and using grep eliminated any species that probably were genetic dead-ends, too far out of the petota complex, or didn't produce tubers at all. Then I eliminated any that were not very frost resistant or frost resistant and in the highest percentile where noted. Unfortunately, not all the tested accessions were scored, so this limits its usefulness somewhat, but as I understand many were included because they had previously been noted to carry some frost resistance. Sorry, the list is still a bit messy, but it took some work using sed to clean it up to the point where it is at now. Some misc. species are still in there that I haven't yet looked up or didn't have enough information to warrant removal. If you have some info about a particular species (TOM!!?), please chime in so that I can star it on this list or remove it altogether so that this list stays current.
