Not Tom, but yes, you can grow sweet potatoes from seed, however, they have a very long fruiting season of 12 to 18 months. This limits seed production to greenhouses for non-tropical locations. There are two significant breeding programs for sweet potatoes, one in North Carolina, and one in Louisiana. There is also a major program run by CGIAR in South America. www.cgiar.org/

Past 3 years, I've had blossoms on Beauregard, Centennial, Covington, Georgia Jet, and O'Henry. I've used Q-Tips to pollinate within same varieties as well as crossing. To date, I've yet to see a single seed. Didn't really expect any but it would have been interesting to see what the offspring would be.

Years ago I read that sometimes half the seed won't germinate..and maybe only one percent of the seed sown will give you decent sweet potatoes and then many rot in storage, fail to sprout or have are disease susceptible. They make polycrosses with notes only on the female lines with mass pollination in the greenhouses which favor seed set late in the season when the days are shorter. I would have to live in a warmer climate to do justice with sweet potatoes. Beings I will never be able to grow all the tomato or potato crosses I have made let alone OP seed, I think I have to accept my specialization.
