In all of the previous years, I've gone with fermentation. This year, however, I'm n a new situation and could not (well, strongly preferred not to) mess with that. So I went with the Comet/Ajax method as outlined on the wintersowing site. I'm not terribly fond of it, however it was the option I chose for the first part of this season. Now, I've finally been able to locate & buy some TSP, I have some questions.
1. Do I need to worry about dumping this down my drain? We have a septic lagoon and everything goes straight to it. If it'll kill my lagoon, what suggestions do you have for easy disposal?
2. I'm not completely convinced of the effectiveness of the Comet/Ajax method and would like to do something further to the already-cleaned seeds from this year. Should I do a quickie dunk in TSP and/or bleach or would the TSP be too much for bare seeds? If I can do a TSP/bleach treatment, how long for each? Can I do it now or should I wait until spring right before planting? I ask that last question because I worry about sending out seeds to others that have not been properly processed.
3. Would you use TSP for all of the family, including TPS, tomatoes, peppers, ground cherries, and tomatillos, etc? Or just TPS and tomatoes since they seem to be the disease magnets?
4. And, finally, the step-by-step process used. I found the following from Tom over at T'ville:
Soak for 15 minutes in a 10% solution of TSP, followed by a 30 minute soak in a 10% solution of bleach. Then a final soak in hot water (122*) for 20 minutes.
Is all of this done at seed-saving time? Did I get it all?
Whew. That was a lot of pent-up questions. Thanks for any help!
