Sylvia Schmidt, Germany of radio-flora fame, asked me what I knew of the Kumato tomato....what were the parents?.. etc.
Yes, I have tried the Kumato and saved seed from it and made crosses. Also, I have developed many tomato varieties of a similar color independently using the recombination of green and red tomato breeding. Using the other chocolate, black, brown, etc. colors only makes the study of Kumato bloodlines more confusing to the average enthusiast.

The discussion about Kumato has been going on four the last five years and if you have something more to add...go ahead.
Since I have my own "Kumato" type tomatoes with separate pedigree...I may add a few to the website..NWC later on. I am trying to make Open Source tomato varieties a legitimate alternative to patented varieties.

The brand KUMATO® designates tomato fruits grown from hybrid tomato plants varieties SX387 and/or OLMECA that are protected by Community Plant Variety Rights.
Such tomatoes are meticulously produced, harvested, packed and distributed according to specific criteria.
Customers and consumers recognize and select KUMATO® tomatoes from SYNGENTA and its authorized resellers and licensees on the basis of these company's Intellectual Property Rights, which constitute a promise of premium consistent produce capturing all the characters of an unique, genuine and high-quality tomato.
Without these intellectual property rights, consumers and customers would not be able to distinguish tomatoes of SYNGENTA and its licensees from those of other origins, nor would they be able to readily identify the superior qualities that the KUMATO® brand and others intellectual property rights endorse.
Use of KUMATO® trademark to designate tomatoes of unknown origin or tomatoes obtained from illegal reproduction and propagation of the above mentioned protected varieties causes prejudice to SYNGENTA and its authorized resellers and licensees and constitutes an infringement of SYNGENTA intellectual property rights that will be prosecuted by any appropriate legal means.
Authentic flavour
Kumato® is truly exceptional. Try it and you will experience authentic tomato flavour. Intense and sweet. Welcome to a world of sensations all the year round. Welcome to Kumato®.
100% Natural
The quality of Kumato® begins in the field, where growers specially selected by Syngenta tend the fruits using traditional techniques and natural methods. The Kumato® ripens from the inside outwards, always on the plant, and so its colour changes naturally from dark brown to golden green. The fruits it produces are juicy and firm, with high levels of fructose.
• Kumato® is grown in Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and Canada, where the fruits ripen under optimum climatic conditions to ensure the highest fructose level and perfect firmness.
• The expert growers selected follow strict protocols and crop management procedures that respect the environment.
• As a result of rigorous quality controls from the moment they are harvested through to display at the point of sale, only the highest quality fruits are selected.
• All handling, packaging, storage and transport is carried out in temperature controlled hygienic environments, using methods that comply with international health standards for industrial premises (Eurepgap/BRC/IFS)is truly exceptional. Try it and you will experience authentic tomato flavour. Intense and sweet. Welcome to a world of sensations all the year round. Welcome to Kumato®.
