Program so far: - September 12 Morning lecture at Chateau de la Bourdaisiere. Tomato show. 2 days. (Then super fast train to north of France) - September 12 Evening lecture at Haverskerque. Tomato show on 13th. Huge one. - September 15/16 workshop in Belgium dans la région de Bruxelles - September 22/23 workshop in Chateau de la Bourdaisiere - September 25/26 workshop in Morlaix, Brittany - October 3/4 workshop in Switzerland la région du Lac Léman tinyurl.com/c68noj shows where some of the seminars are in a translated (slow to load) link. I hope to get as many stories, questions, work shop discourse summaries as possible to share here. Even though I may be the speaker, I hope to bring back more words from them than I actually speak. It is as much a learning experience opportunity for me and it hopefully will be for my guests and hosts. I hope to see many people who may have their own garden nearby. Walk through the wilds, the gardens, the greenhouses, and share a coffee with them. I expect to talk into the wee hours with some folks and they'd better has a guest house handy. It is not unusual for me to talk with one person 10 hours in a stretch about tomatoes and potatoes! Tom Wagner

Ami,
All I know at this point is near Brussels and the other near Lake Geneva. I am thinking that the actual location has not been firmed up yet. The buzz is ...if I stay longer I could get three more meetings in that many countries.

I was asked if I wanted to stay in Europe a bit longer and visit more countries and talk at more work shops. I thought, "Why Not?"...so the latest round of emails indicated that I might have 2-3 events in Denmark and one or more in Ireland. I won't know for sure for a few days.
As a rest from all of these talks, I am hoping to take an Isle of Man Steam Packet Company jaunt from Dublin and visit Bride, IOM, where my mother's dad was born and raised. Then back home.

Hi Tom I see that you have the progress of your European tour. It is good to share this experience. A question regarding the organization of your conference Haverskerque. You will have access to a computer and a video projector. Someone translate your presentation. How do you present your presentation? Do you use powerpoint? Will you have pictures to explain your work? Would you like tomato plants in the hall to explain how to combine varieties of tomatoes? Do you have any other requests?

Hi Tom Yes, my opportunity to speak and take questions in so many venues is important to me , Kokopellii, and hopefully to everyone attending these work shops. Rarely do I see anyone talking and writing about personal aspects of what to expect 7 months away from seminars like this. It is almost like the work shops are in sway as we live and breathe. All the members and lurkers of the TaterMaterSeeds.com forum can read about my visits and be rather pro-active if they wish. I have been rather vague about what to expect since you, Franck, are the organizer of the Haverskerque invitation. Kokopelli is the other host. That said, the format has been hinted about; saving your own seed, crossing and segregation experiments, on-hands hybridization instruction, history of my Tater Mater Seeds, current activities, and future goals, and suggestions as to future goals regarding my work and how that may impact each attendee's activities, and the sharing of research and materials to countries around the world. I hope we have more than one computer, one for the PowerPoint presentations (several), one for showing individual pictures, taking entries from the guests on a Word Doc., perhaps uploads from guests, translation options, vocal translations by Dominique and others, video presentations of my work in the United States, perhaps videos of potato/tomato gardens from a previous work shop in Europe as they unfold, and many hand-outs. The PowerPoints will have captioning in English and French. I am going to suggest that any attendee that has questions will be able to submit those questions to us ahead of time and that the question be projected on a screen either in French or English, and my brief answer also projected in French or English on that same screen. I would point to the question on the screen and ad lib as necessary. The live direct questions will be awkward as I am desperately trying to learn French. The live questions could be tranlated by Dominique, etc. I expect follow ups anyway. I will have the flash drives assembled to have available for the presentations and perhaps as gifts? Who knows? Maybe I could take orders for CD's of my presentations. Maybe some day someone will finally pull through and help me put TaterMaterSeeds.com up as a real web site rather than this meager forum and my blog. Absolutely! I would like to have even a few plants from my own breeding work as examples of potted plants grown expressively for this event. If there are enough plants, each person could have a chance to make their own cross of their choosing with step by step instructions by me. Those potted plants will be taken back to a volunteer with a greenhouse or a sunny window in their house to complete the maturation and ripening of the fruit with the anticipation of having their own hybrid seed, performed by them and me. If a guest wants to bring their favorite variety to the show in a pot or a just a tomato flower bouquet in a vase of water, we could custom hybridize for that individual. For example if a guest has an Ananas Noire tomato plant in a pot --- tinyurl.com/aa6r43 --, they could bring it to the show. I could have a tomato vine of a hybrid [(Ananas Noire X Green Zebra) X Vintage Wine] in a pot at the show. The attendee could assist me in procuring the pollen from my plant and then, again with my guidance, emasculate a flower of the Ananas Noire and then proceed to pollinate the flower(s) and string tag the cross. The attendee would have a great cross for their future enjoyment or varietal development. I will have plenty. Those requests will be forthcoming over the next 6 months or so. You may have requests too. How many times do you see a public display of a work shop evolving this far in advance and so openly transparent? If you are a reader of this forum...please chime in. Thanks, Franck, for bringing these questions to my forum. Instead of the world revolving around me, all of us can revolve around each other, providing we have the guts to be rather blatant about our goals of preserving our varieties but also creating the new ones too. I can only say, that I wished I was going with you. And I do hope that you will have a CD on your presentations. It would be very interesting to me and other hopeful breeders / followers of your work.

Ever since I was a kid of about 6 when my Uncle Joe Wagner had a movie camera and tape recorder brought to the farm, and hearing my voice and viewing my then skinny/silly face; I have been somewhat shy of the whole thing. But I would bet there could be all kinds of ways of putting at least some of it on a CD, video tape, still shots, recordings, etc.; anything that could be jumbled together.
I just hope I can get a great video and digital picture record of those gardens I get to visit before I die. Between myself and others I hope to capture with ID cards as many potato and tomato varieties as possible in every location I visit. I am hoping to record sit down dinners with folks in their homes talking about tomatoes and potatoes and any thing else that comes to mind. If nothing else I could transcribe the audio to a printed form and then submit to a book like format. That would be fun.

Tom, those count don't care how you look or sound, and those that care don't count. I know (and many others, I am sure) that you are a source of a wealth of knowledge, and I am much more interested in obtaining that knowledge, than I am judging you at a speaking or beauty contest. I would love to have copies of all the CDs that you might be willing to share about your trip, all the gardens, lectures, and conversations. I find that the more I learn the less I know, and the more I want to learn. If not a CD, then a book, but I am sure that unfortunately in a book format that there will be unseemingly important (at least to us beginners) information lost.
