Tom, at the top of your blog, you describe it thusly:
"Blog devoted to potato and tomato breeding, but may include forays into politics, culture, and the like."
I wonder, since you are open to off-topic topics, what you think the role of technology will be in the future of plant breeding. What are your thoughts on the benefits and dangers of genetically modified organisms (specifically food plants?) Do you think this technology will ever go hand-in-hand with traditional breeding endeavors, or are the two paths too fundamentally different?

Johno,
I must give you, Johno, a special thanks for not only being the first to view/respond about my blog, but actually be the one to inspire me to go looking for the blog idea that lay so dormant all of these years.
Google took over the blog site and I was able to sign on with my name/password and noted the new features. Great, this is better than a website!
GMO technology: The Benefits Groundbreaking science Could make a difference between success and failures Can be patented Round up ready, BT ready, etc. Bypasses conventional breeding Benefits big growers etc
GMO technology: The Detractors Closed science Could endanger people and the environment Not available to the public Hurts the little grower Shuns Burbank breeders like myself etc.
I am not necessarily an enemy of GMO, however, I truly believe that I am an enemy of the GMO industry. If I were to obtain a BT Atlantic potato, would I breed it into my own breeding program? I one time, I wanted to do this. I was blocked from all GMO communications since. I am proud to be GMO free.
By default, I am nominally against the GMOs but not as that which is so commonly and blatantly espoused by left wing politics.
I have wanted to be a plant breeder, hired by the big guys, but the emphasis on gene splicing, molecular biologists, has relegated me to the ash bin.
Hope is that folks will find a place for the old fashioned Burbank breeder. There has a been a disconnect for the last thirty years at least.

Thank you for the reply, Tom. I think we're on the same page here - against the industry as it stands, but see the potential...
I don't know how I inspired you about the blog idea, except that I started one of my own, but whatever it was, I'm glad it worked! I relied heavily on my wife to help me get started with my blog, but blogspot is pretty easy to navigate once you get going.
I especially like the potato plate picture. I was telling my wife about it, and she noted that the only colorful potato that catches her attention is something like Yukon Gold. While I don't share her opinion, it makes me wonder if the general population does? At least Yukon Gold is a gateway potato - lol. ;D Maybe a potato similar but superior would be a good way to break into selling something with mass appeal?
Am I understanding correctly that you [Tom] intend to start selling some of your creations here? Are you going to focus on non-OP's to make some dough while you are trying to figure out how to cash in on the 50 years of OP research?

I know I'd buy some taters and maters.

Tom, you do have editing powers. Just send a pm to Alan, he will show you. As a moderator at HG, I don't have these powers but some others...which nobody uses anyway... but I think you've been hi-jacket by wackos...relishing in the fact their nonsense stays published in some sort.
