Some are 5-10 hill, like purple maori from wendy, and some of the diploids from tom. Many are 25+hills like black irish, skagit plenty, ozzette, laverton, rose finn apple, victoria, phuroro, jacobson's golden red bud, thunderation, azul y azul, and a few others. I am done hilling, a do cross pollinations twice per day. I am really excited to see my yeild this season.

I am glad Doug that you are growing some of my potatoes. Is any of my named varieties doing well for you like AmeyX and LNX?
I have a flower festival going on with many colors. I was away in June and have slowly taking back the garden from the weeds. I have pictures to take after the clean-up. I was not able to hill them well enough so I don't expect the yields to be impressive. There is so much hilling and weeding that I have to do. I got to say, mulch with pine needles if you have some. I got a co-worker to give me a huge bag of dried needles and those hills are weed-free. I push it to the side to hill some more and sprinkle them again around the plants. The Stuff is amazing. I grew some winter rye but the pigeons love to steal the dried straw for their little nests
I have 1 hill of most but up to 3 hills per variety one those that I liked the best from last year. I am now sure how many hills in total.
But I am going to get some new potatoes maybe for the 4th of july BBQ!

So the pine needles don't stunt the potatoes? It is noteworthy in nature one rarely finds any plants growing under a pine tree.

thefutureI sprinkled a thin layer that just prevents the weeds but is loose and the plants seem healthy and growing as normal. I know the pine needles are acidic, not an obvious effect on the plant so far. Will know more at harvest time. The other 'good' thing is that they seem not to compost and if I can recover the mulch at the end of the season can be re-used next year. I also use maple leaves and oak leaves from the fall. The maple composts in one season but oak seem to last 2 seasons. I also put some pine needles around some of the dwarf tomatoes I am growing this year and no weeding. If I have good results I am going to haul more pine needles next year for this. I need some mulch (free) for the potatoes. Anybody has comfrey?

Wendy, all the tubers from you are doing great, except for the moui-moui which rotted in the pot (my fault, as I kept it to wet I think), and I expect a nice harvest.

@wendy do keep me posted on how this works. I have access to lots of pine needles.

thefuture I'll let you know but for first glance the growth is not stunt. In fact I have plants at 4ft tall, one kennebeck, one unk8 and my Amey Azul are monsters. If it does affect the tubers is to be seen. No weeding is pretty good. Water conservation is another plus, those with pine needle does not dry out too much even when we had 2-3 weeks w/o rain here in MA. I am even thinking of layering some leaf mulch or bark and then top with pine needles for next year.

Hi Tom, I received the India 1638 plant from Wendy last year. Here's the thing, I cannot find any information on the internet for that. However, I do see an India 1038 at ARS-GRIN. Could the name have been mixed up or mislabeled? Is India 1038 what you sent to Wendy?

Is hard to keep records straight with names washing off after I write on tubers. I have confused few numbers here and there...for the most part I kept good pictures and notes....to dig out later. I hope India1038 found a good home
