I have some seed coming that I will get to do here before too long, but for sake of discussion, lets say that I ordered a pack of Huagalina (for some reason I seem to be enamored of that variety). If I were to germ 20 seeds, what is the likelihood that I would get "true to type" mini tubers to plant out? I apologize for not knowing the nomenclature, but I am sure you all know what I mean.
Anyway,I suspect there will be some variation, but what would be my chances of success in finding a true to type in the seed put to germination?

It will never be true in the sense that it will be genetically identical to the parent, but there is a good chance that some of the progeny will look substantially similar. The odds of that will vary from line to line; it is more likely in self-pollinated seed.

Thanks for the help bill.I know that any crosses will have lots of variation,I was really interested in knowing how stable the strains that Tom offers are.
It is a bit of a problem with TPS being relatively unknown, that information on his offerings are pretty limited. That makes it a little difficult in selecting what to try, because there aren't a whole out of folks growing them out yet.
I think Wendy has grown a few of the strains I am interested in,but she hasn't been around for some time now.
Thanks again for the help.

The information about my lines of TPS are rather minimal that is for sure. I am not sure if I can keep my offerings current in the future anyway. This forum has not been so active as many folks go to the FaceBook Kenosha Potato Project during the last year. I have spent most of the year extracting tomato seed since April and still not done.

It really depends on the parents and how inbred the parent lines are. The closer genetically the two parents are will determine this. Two wildly different parents could produce a very wide array of tubers.

It varies. Skagit Magic (diploid) came fairly true to type, apart from a few outliers which may have been a stray seed from something else, or a cross. A lot of tetraploid varieties show a wide range.

Some TPS I've grown from Tom Wagner seem more uniform than others.None are "true to type" since true seeds express the genes of the mother plant. Yungay for example segregated into 2 types, both were yellow skin yellow flesh same flavor and size resembling the mother but one had pink eyes one more yellow eyes. Oregon peaks TPS was similar, all grew white potatoes of similar flavor and size and this was a TPS I dont knoeƱw the mother. Huagalina when I grew this TPS some were red skin with patches of yellow and flesh yellow. I got some solid red were not the same in flavor. I only regrew the first.

Expecting true to type on TPS is ludicrous. That is the greatest feature of Potato Breeding. I know many are tomato seed savers and complain when I send out seed that segregates. Hehe
