I am starting something new here. I hope to see tomato collections in the future and I am starting with a link to this one in Belgium. I will post different tomato gardens until I reach 100. The names are as they were in the original language, but I may offer English translation when possible. I hope to see some of my creations in each garden and it is likely true that one can see heaven from a garden. If I do,in fact, actually get to see some of those gardens I will ask someone over there, if I could buy la valise énorme, avec les trous de jambe a découpé dans le fond, just so I could walk off with some of the tomatoes and potatoes!! I would unpack every night with all kinds of wondrous goodies to sample.
But then that would help your situation, would it?

No, not really. But, I think that if you post what you seen and tasted I can do it virtually. I hope you will get to see them summer.

What an awesome list, Tom. I hope you are able to visit some of these gardens on your European tour this fall. I'm forwarding this list to my brother-in-law who's currently on a work/study program in France. He is an avid gardener and former chef. I'm sure he would love to visit as many of these gardens as time would allow. Thanks for the info!

Franck Bedoquet sent me an email indicating that I would be treated as a VIP at the Haverskerque tomato festival. I will see a lot of tomatoes and will talk with the guests about plant breeding with plants available in pots to show my skills as they are.
I told Franck that I......
J'aimerais être le l'un officiellement introduire certaines de mes nouvelles lignes de légumes.
Such fun!!!
Glenn, have you brother-in-law stop by whichever tent they put me under at Haverskerque. I am going to request a computer to be available for the guests to talk or type to me in French and the PC spitting out English.

The computer translator is a great idea. Should make your trip much more enjoyable and give both you and your participants a much wider form for communication.

Grungy,
Thanks for seeing the value in the translation thing on the computer.
With so many laptops available, (I don't have one) surely someone will and can set it up at one of the table where I am talking, and by the time I get through talking with one person, a volunteer will show me the PC message translated so that with my poor hearing will be able to not miss a beat on the next conversation, especially if someone is near who can translate my words back to the the questioner.
One of my teaching plans the other week was to do a story write beginning with one student writing an introduction of a story for 5 minutes, then hand that story over to five other people to write additional story lines. The original author finished for 5 minutes. Some of those students were tickled to get to read 'their' story in front of class.
I need to have folks write questions in their own tongue and add to those questions so that I have story lines to read the next day. That would be fun at these tomato festivals. If I get a chance to compile all of those questions and concerns, then my seminars would be keyed to the concerns of everyone, especially if the work shops go on for two days.
If people have a chance to type in their ideas, I could email all of those back with an interpreter to make sure I get the right ebb and flow disseminated. If everyone could feel appreciated despite the language barrier, I would feel like I will accomplish what I set out to do.

Hopefully when you return home, you will bring a copy of the questions and answers and add that to this forum. I think that people here in North America would be stimulated to ask questions themselves, from the "conversations" that would already be started.
